Structural hollow sections – SHS, RHS and CHS for columns, trusses and bracing
Hollow sections are strong in compression and torsion, clean to look at and easy to protect – the natural choice for columns, trusses, space frames, canopies and bracing. World Steel sources square, rectangular and circular hollow sections to American, Australian, European, Japanese and Chinese standards.

Cold-formed or hot-finished?
Cold-formed hollow sections are roll-formed from strip and welded – the most common and economical type (EN 10219, ASTM A500, AS/NZS 1163, JIS G3466, GB/T 6728). Their corners are work-hardened, with tighter corner radii rules for welding. Hot-finished sections (EN 10210) are formed or normalised hot, with uniform properties and smaller corner radii – preferred for heavily loaded or fatigue-sensitive members.
Hollow sections carry axial load equally about both axes, resist torsion and lateral buckling, and need less paint and fire protection per metre than open sections of the same capacity.
Aplicações
Where hollow sections work best
Columns
Equal strength in both directions – multi-storey and portal columns, often concrete-filled.
Trusses & space frames
Light, stiff chords and diagonals with direct welded joints.
Bracing & struts
High buckling resistance for their weight.
Canopies & architecture
Clean lines for exposed steel, façades and walkways.
Handrails & access
Stairs, platforms and guard rails.
Light frames
Mezzanines, equipment frames and modular buildings.

FAQ
Perguntas frequentes
What is the difference between SHS, RHS and CHS?
Square hollow section, rectangular hollow section and circular hollow section – the shape of the tube.
Is structural tube the same as pipe?
No. Structural hollow sections are specified by outside dimensions, wall thickness and yield strength; pipe is specified for conveying fluids by nominal size, schedule and pressure rating. Some pipe grades are also used structurally.
Which grade is equivalent to S355J2H?
Nearest grades are ASTM A500 Gr C or A1085, AS/NZS 1163 C350L0, JIS STKR490 and GB Q355 – with differences in toughness and tolerances to check.
