Shop application
In the shop, members are blasted, primed and coated under controlled conditions, turned for the best spray position and measured before dispatch. Fire protection runs in parallel with site works, not after erection.
- Consistent quality and thickness control.
- No scaffolds or lifts for coating.
- Shorter site programme.
Site application
- No transport or handling damage to the coating.
- Flexible where the design is still changing.
- Depends on weather, access and site labour.
Managing transport and erection
- Choose a product suitable for off-site application and handling.
- Pack with soft supports, protect lifting points.
- Leave connections uncoated where bolts and site welds are made, then complete them on site with the same system.
- Agree the touch-up procedure in the ITP.
The touch-up must use the same product and achieve the scheduled thickness – it is part of the certified system.
FAQ
Is factory-applied intumescent more expensive?
Usually it is cheaper overall: application is more efficient and site costs are lower, even after allowing for packing and touch-up.
Preliminary calculations are provided for estimation purposes only. Final coating thickness and fire protection system selection must be verified against the approved product documentation, applicable project requirements and relevant engineering assessments.
