Fire-rated building systems for steel buildings

Fire protection of the steel frame keeps the building standing; compartmentation keeps fire and smoke where they start. World Steel selects fire-rated sandwich panels, doorsets, glazing, shutters and curtains tested for your market and coordinates them with the steel structure.

Compartmentation completes the fire strategy

Large steel buildings are divided into fire compartments by fire-rated walls and floors. Every opening in those walls – doors, glazing, conveyor openings, service hatches – must be closed by a system tested for the same separation, and smoke must be held back long enough for escape.

Fire ratings belong to tested assemblies: a panel wall with its joints and fixings, a door with its frame, hardware and seals, a curtain with its head box and controls. World Steel selects the systems your code and fire engineer require and supplies the test and classification documents for the products chosen – nothing is assumed.

Fire resistance classes

What R, E, I, W, M and S mean

European classification under EN 13501-2 – other markets express the same ideas in hours or FRLs.

R – loadbearing capacitystructure

R – loadbearing capacity

The element keeps carrying its load for the classified time – the criterion for protected steel beams and columns.

E – integrityflames and hot gases

E – integrity

No flames or hot gases pass through – the basic criterion for shutters, curtains and most glazing.

I – insulationunexposed side stays cool

I – insulation

The temperature rise on the protected side stays limited – required for walls and doors on escape routes.

W, M, S – extra criteriaradiation · impact · smoke

W, M, S – extra criteria

W limits radiation (EW glazing), M adds mechanical impact for fire walls, S200 / Sa limit smoke leakage through doors.

Supplied with the steel

Openings designed with the structure

Doors, shutters and curtains hang on steel – trimmers, head beams and posts that must stay in place for the same rating. World Steel details that framing in the Tekla model, protects it with intumescent coatings or boards, and seals every service penetration with tested firestop systems.

FAQ

Preguntas frecuentes

Is a non-combustible panel the same as a fire-rated wall?

No. Non-combustibility is a reaction-to-fire property of a material. A fire-resistance rating (for example EI 60) belongs to a tested wall system with its thickness, joints, fixings and supports.

Do fire curtains replace fire doors or walls?

Sometimes, where the fire engineer and authority accept them. Most fire curtains are integrity-only (E or EW), so they are not equivalent to an insulated fire wall.

Which documents do you provide?

For the products selected: technical data sheets, safety data sheets, fire test or classification reports, certificates or listings valid in your market, installation instructions and – where applicable – the Declaration of Performance.

Can you supply systems certified for the US, Europe and Australia?

We select products with test evidence for the market of each project. A certificate or listing is never assumed to be valid in every market.

Planning fire compartments in a steel building?

Send the fire strategy, compartment layout and required ratings – we propose tested systems with the steel package.
