Formosa Ha Tinh Steel

Integrated blast-furnace steel producer in Ha Tinh, Vietnam, developed by Taiwan's Formosa Plastics Group, producing hot-rolled coil and long products.

Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation was formed in 2008 to build an integrated iron and steelmaking plant at a deep-water port in the Vung Ang Economic Zone of Ha Tinh province. The project was developed by Taiwan's Formosa Plastics Group, with China Steel Corporation and JFE Steel among the shareholders. The first phase was planned at about 7.5 million tonnes per year, comprising flat products and rebar and other rolled long products. Its hot strip mill produced its first coil in late 2015, and the first and second blast furnaces started in 2017 and 2018.

In the structural steel and PEB supply chain, hot-rolled coil from a large integrated mill such as Formosa Ha Tinh is processed into plate and strip. Cut-to-length plate is used for the flanges, webs, end plates and base plates of welded built-up members, while thinner coil is pickled, cold-rolled and hot-dip coated by downstream processors to become the substrate for cold-formed purlins, girts and roof and wall sheeting. Domestic coil production shortens lead times for Vietnamese fabricators. For export projects, the steel grade must still be specified and certified to the standard required by the design code – for example ASTM A572 / A36, EN 10025-2 or AS/NZS 3678 – and confirmed by mill test certificates.

Produtos utilizados em PEB e estruturas metálicas

  • Hot-rolled coil – feedstock for cut-to-length plate and strip used in built-up members
  • Hot-rolled coil for downstream cold rolling and metallic coating – purlin, girt and sheeting substrate
  • Rebar and other long products – reinforced concrete foundations and slabs
