Steel pipe – seamless and welded, for structures and piping

Steel pipe carries fluids in process plants, forms piles and columns, and makes handrails, trusses and supports. World Steel sources seamless and welded pipe to American, European, Japanese, Chinese and Australian standards – for pipe spools, structures and site works.

Pipe or structural tube?

Pipe is made to carry pressure: it is sized by nominal pipe size and wall schedule, tested for pressure and certified for its service temperature. Structural tube is sized by outside diameter and wall and specified by yield strength. Both appear in steel structures – pipe in piles, columns and handrails, structural CHS in trusses and frames – but they are bought to different standards.

Seamless pipe is pierced and rolled from solid billet – the choice for high pressure and temperature. Welded pipe (ERW or submerged-arc welded) is formed from strip or plate – economical and available in large diameters.

Pipe spools, piles and pipe structures

World Steel fabricates pipe into pressure spools, pipe racks and supports, piles and structural members in the same shop as the steel structure. See pressure piping fabrication, pipe racks and structural hollow sections.

FAQ

Domande frequenti

What is the difference between A53 and A106 pipe?

A53 is a general pipe in welded or seamless form; A106 is seamless pipe for high-temperature service. Many mills certify pipe to both.

What does schedule mean?

The wall-thickness series of a pipe size (for example Sch 40, Sch 80) under ASME B36.10 for carbon steel and B36.19 for stainless steel.

Can pipe be used as a structural member?

Yes, when the design uses the pipe grade's properties – common for piles, columns and handrails. For main structural members, structural CHS grades are usually specified.
