What it is
ASTM F1554 is the US specification for anchor rods that hold column base plates to concrete foundations. The grade number is the minimum yield strength in ksi; the end of each rod is painted so the grade can be checked after the concrete is poured.
Grades
| Grade | Yield (min.) | Tensile | Colour | Weldable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 36 | 36 ksi (248 MPa) | 58 – 80 ksi | Blue | Yes (S1 for 55) |
| 55 | 55 ksi (380 MPa) | 75 – 95 ksi | Yellow | With supplement S1 |
| 105 | 105 ksi (724 MPa) | 125 – 150 ksi | Red | No |
Shapes and parts
- L-bend (hooked) and J-hook rods for light to moderate tension
- Headed rods – forged head or heavy hex nut tack-welded with a plate washer – for high tension
- Straight threaded rods with nuts and an embedded plate
- Plate washers sized for oversize base plate holes (AISC Design Guide 1)
- Levelling nuts, templates and sleeves – see anchor bolt assemblies
The anchor design – embedment, edge distance, concrete breakout and pull-out – follows ACI 318 Chapter 17 and AISC Design Guide 1.

Preguntas frecuentes
Why are anchor rods painted at the end?
So inspectors can verify the grade after the rods are cast in – blue for Grade 36, yellow for 55, red for 105.
Can anchor rods be welded?
Grade 36 yes; Grade 55 only with supplement S1; Grade 105 should not be welded.
