Ampelite
Australian manufacturer of fibreglass and polycarbonate roof sheeting, skylights and ventilators, founded in Melbourne in 1969.
Ampelite was founded in 1969 in Melbourne by the brothers Ed and Henk Verhagen, and manufactures in Dandenong, Victoria. It produces fibreglass (GRP) and polycarbonate roof sheeting in a large range of profiles, including gel-coated fibreglass products such as Wonderglas GC, Cool-lite GC, Webglas GC and FS Firecheck, as well as skylight systems and ventilators. Its products are distributed in Australia, New Zealand and several Asian markets.
Translucent sheeting is the usual way to bring daylight into pre-engineered buildings. Panels are made in the same profile as the adjacent metal roof or wall sheet, so they lap into the sheeting and are fixed to the same purlins or girts. Glass-fibre reinforced polyester (GRP) sheets with a gel coat resist UV and weathering, while polycarbonate offers higher impact resistance and light transmission. Designers consider light transmission, heat gain, fire behaviour, UV protection and the load span of the panel, which is usually lower than that of the steel sheet. Safety is critical: translucent sheets are generally not trafficable, so safety mesh or other fall protection is needed during construction and maintenance.
