Pipe racks and pipe bridges – the backbone of the plant

Pipe racks carry the process lines, utilities, cable trays and walkways that connect every unit of a plant. World Steel fabricates main and secondary racks, pipe bridges and pre-assembled rack modules – with pipe supports, guides and anchors fitted – coated or galvanized for the plant environment.

Pipe rack bents and struts (illustration)

How a pipe rack is built

A pipe rack is a series of portal bents – two columns joined by beams at each pipe level – connected by longitudinal struts and braced in selected bays. Pipes run along the levels, with large and hot lines on the outer positions, and cable trays usually on the top level. Bent spacing follows the allowable pipe spans, typically around six metres.

Racks carry pipe weight, contents and test water, thermal anchor and friction forces, wind and seismic actions. The structural design and the pipe support layout come from the plant designer; we fabricate them, fit the supports and deliver the rack as members or as modules.

Dressed in the shop

Pipe supports, trays and access fitted before shipping

Shoes, guides, line stops and anchors, cable tray brackets, walkways, ladders and handrails can be fitted in the shop to the support layout. Modules are trial-assembled and dimensionally checked so they connect first time at site. Pipe spools can be supplied from the same shop – see pressure piping fabrication.

FAQ

Câu hỏi thường gặp

Stick-built or modular pipe rack?

Modules move work to the shop and suit remote sites and tight schedules; stick-built racks are lighter to ship and suit sites with good crane access and labour.

Can pipe racks be galvanized?

Yes – hot-dip galvanizing to ISO 1461 or ASTM A123, alone or with a paint system (duplex) for aggressive environments.

Do you supply the pipe supports?

Yes – shoes, guides, stops and anchors to the support layout, fitted in the shop or shipped loose.
