What IAS AC472 is
The International Accreditation Service (IAS) is a US accreditation body. Its criteria AC472 define how a manufacturer of metal building systems – the pre-engineered buildings that combine a primary rigid frame, cold-formed secondary members, roof and wall cladding and accessories – must control design, purchasing, fabrication, inspection and records so that a building official can rely on the plant's own quality system instead of sending a special inspector into the shop.
An accredited manufacturer is not simply audited once. IAS reviews the written quality manual and procedures, an IAS-accredited inspection agency carries out periodic, unannounced in-plant inspections, and IAS reassesses the programme on site. World Steel's in-plant inspections are performed by Smith-Emery Laboratories, Inc. (IAS inspection agency AA-554). The accreditation is renewed on a fixed cycle; the current certificate is valid up to 1 August 2027.
Why it matters on a US project
The International Building Code requires special inspection of structural steel fabrication (IBC Chapter 17). Section 1704.2.5.1 lets the building official waive special inspection of work done on the premises of an approved fabricator – a fabricator whose written procedures and quality control manuals have been reviewed and whose fabrication practices are audited periodically by an approved agency. AC472 accreditation is the recognised route to that approval for metal building manufacturers: World Steel's certificate states that the in-plant inspection programme complies with IBC Section 1704.2.5.1 of the 2015, 2018, 2021 and 2024 editions.
For owners and contractors this means fewer third-party shop inspections, less schedule risk and a supplier whose design calculations, drawings and fabrication are already under continuous independent surveillance. IAS AC472 accreditation is also required for membership of the Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA), so it is the quality benchmark US specifiers expect from a metal building supplier. Read more in US standards and US PEB standards.
The AC472 accreditation covers metal building systems (Part A fabrication and Part C design). Other structural steel and miscellaneous metals for US projects are fabricated under the same quality system, AWS D1.1 welding and the project's special inspection requirements.
Scope of World Steel's accreditation
The certificate covers two parts of AC472 at two sites. Part A – Fabrication of structural weldments and cold-formed products requiring welding applies to the factory in Hai Son Industrial Park, where built-up tapered frames, hot-rolled members, cold-formed purlins and girts and welded accessories are produced. Part C – Design of metal building systems applies to the engineering office in Ho Chi Minh City, where buildings are designed and detailed to US codes – IBC loads per ASCE 7, steel design to AISC 360 and AISI S100, and welding to AWS D1.1.
| Part | Activity | Site |
|---|---|---|
| Part A | Fabrication of structural weldments and cold-formed products requiring welding | Factory – Hai Son Industrial Park, Duc Hoa, Tay Ninh |
| Part C | Design of metal building systems | Engineering office – Ho Chi Minh City |
What is audited
The AC472 programme looks at every activity that determines the quality of a delivered building: contract and design review, engineering calculations and drawing control, purchasing and supplier control (including outsourced cold-formed products), receiving inspection and material traceability, welding procedures and welder qualifications, calibration of equipment, in-process and final inspection, non-conformance and corrective action, training, document control and quality records. World Steel reports being the first company in Asia to achieve IAS AC472 accreditation, and the programme has been maintained through repeated re-accreditation cycles.
- Design: load criteria, calculation checking, drawing approval and revision control.
- Materials: mill test reports, heat-number traceability from plate to finished member.
- Welding: AWS D1.1 procedures, qualified welders and inspectors, visual and NDT inspection.
- Coatings and packing: surface preparation, paint inspection, marking and shipping records.
