A box encasement is built from fire boards fixed to noggins, steel angles or directly to each other around the section; the tested system defines board thickness, fixing spacing and joint treatment.
Boxed protection is sized using the boxed section factor (heated perimeter of the box) under EN 13381-4, BS 476-21 or ASTM E119 data.
Penetrations and connections to walls and slabs need tested details or firestop products.

Board encasement heats the steel through the box perimeter, so the boxed section factor is used – usually lower than the profile value, needing less protection.
