Europe and the UK

Intumescents are tested to EN 13381-8, which produces the assessed thickness data; results are classified under EN 13501-2, and products obtain a European Technical Assessment under EAD 350402 for CE marking. The UK still references BS 476 but widely accepts EN 13381-8 data.

United States

Fire resistance is tested to ASTM E119 / UL 263; UL listed designs give the thickness for a member type and W/D. Hydrocarbon exposure uses UL 1709.

Australia and New Zealand

AS 1530.4 is the fire test, expressed as FRL; AS 4100 Section 12 covers the fire design of steel, including the limiting temperature and the exposed surface area to mass ratio ksm.

What this means for a project

The authority having jurisdiction decides which approvals are accepted. Check early that the selected product has accepted data for every rating, section shape and size in the schedule.

FAQ

Is a product with BS 476 data accepted in Europe?

Generally EN 13381-8 / ETA data is required for CE marking; BS 476 data is a UK national route.
