Why serrated
Serrations are notches cut into the top edge of the bearing bars before they are welded into grating. The sharp edges grip shoe soles and reduce slipping where floors are wet, oily, greasy, icy or sloping – wash-down areas, offshore and port platforms, food plants, outdoor stairs and ramps. Specify S in the WS code, for example WS-G325/30/100-S-G.
Load and deflection factors
The notches reduce the effective depth of the bar. Multiply the plain-bar safe load by the load factor and the deflection by the deflection factor:
| WS bar | Bar (mm) | Load factor | Deflection factor |
|---|---|---|---|
| WS-G655 | 65 × 5 | 0.92 | 1.04 |
| WS-G555 | 55 × 5 | 0.90 | 1.05 |
| WS-G505 | 50 × 5 | 0.89 | 1.06 |
| WS-G455 | 45 × 5 | 0.88 | 1.07 |
| WS-G405 | 40 × 5 | 0.87 | 1.07 |
| WS-G403 | 40 × 3 | 0.87 | 1.07 |
| WS-G325 | 32 × 5 | 0.83 | 1.09 |
| WS-G323 | 32 × 3 | 0.83 | 1.09 |
| WS-G255 | 25 × 5 | 0.79 | 1.12 |
| WS-G253 | 25 × 3 | 0.79 | 1.12 |
20 × 5 mm serrated bars at 60 mm pitch are not recommended. Slip resistance is classified to AS 4586 or DIN 51130 by test where a rating is specified.

Questions fréquentes
Is serrated grating weaker?
Slightly – the notches reduce the effective depth. Load factors are 0.79–0.92 depending on the bar, so a deeper bar may be needed for the same span.
Where should serrated grating be used?
Wet, oily, icy, sloping or outdoor floors and stairs where slip resistance matters more than a smooth surface.
