Storage & surge bins
Bolted or welded bins with stiffened walls, roofs, inlets and level-instrument nozzles.

Solution · Bulk handling
A bin that does not empty, a hopper that arches or a chute that wears through in months stops a plant. World Steel fabricates bins, hoppers and chutes with the geometry, liners and stiffening the bulk material needs – and delivers them with their support structure, platforms and access.

The shape of a hopper decides how a bulk solid flows. In mass flow the whole contents move when the outlet opens – first in, first out, no dead zones – which needs steep, smooth walls. In funnel flow material flows through a central channel while the rest stays still – a simpler, lower bin, suitable for free-flowing, non-degrading materials.
Wall angle, outlet size and liner are selected from the flow properties of the material. World Steel fabricates to your bin designer's geometry or prepares the detailed design when the flow data and loads are available, with stiffeners, ring beams and supports sized for the pressures that bulk solids exert on the walls.

Quality
Hopper wall angles, outlet size and the flatness of liner surfaces affect flow, so they are checked against the drawing. Outlet flanges are drilled to the gate or feeder, and bins with their hoppers and supports are trial-fitted before dispatch. See also our square steel silos and mining structures.
Liners
Typical choices – the material and the flow design decide.
| Option | Use |
|---|---|
| Carbon steel plate | Free-flowing, non-abrasive materials |
| Abrasion-resistant plate (e.g. 400–500 HBW) | Ore, coal, aggregates, clinker – impact and sliding wear |
| Stainless steel (304 / 316) | Food, feed, chemicals; smooth walls for mass flow |
| UHMWPE or ceramic liners | Sticky or cohesive materials; severe abrasion |
| Bolted replaceable liners | Chutes and impact zones – change without cutting |
FAQ
A bin is a storage vessel, usually smaller and often square; the hopper is the converging bottom section that feeds the outlet; a silo is a taller storage structure, often in groups of cells.
Mass flow avoids dead zones and segregation and suits cohesive, degrading or perishable materials; funnel flow is lower and cheaper for free-flowing, durable materials.
Yes – abrasion-resistant plate, stainless steel and bolted replaceable liners; polymer and ceramic liners through specialist suppliers.
