Steel cold storage building with refrigeration plant

Thermal continuity is a structural decision

In a cold store every place where steel crosses the insulation is a cold bridge, and every leak in the vapour barrier becomes ice. That is why the structure of a cold store is designed differently from an ordinary warehouse: the main frame sits outside the insulated box or is wrapped by it, ceilings hang from the roof steel through sealed penetrations, and the floor of a freezer is protected against frost heave.

World Steel designs and fabricates the steel frame, roof and wall framing, ceiling hangers, plant platforms and insulated panel support for chilled and frozen warehouses – coordinated with the refrigeration contractor, the panel supplier and the racking supplier, so the whole building works as one envelope.

エンジニアリング

Box-in-box: steel stays warm

In a box-in-box cold store the portal frame, purlins and girts stay on the warm side. The insulated walls stand on the slab, the ceiling hangs from the roof steel on a grid of hangers, and only small, sealed and insulated penetrations cross the envelope.

The result is fewer cold bridges, no condensation on structural steel, easy future re-configuration of rooms – and a structure that is designed for the real loads of ceilings, evaporators, lighting and sprinklers.

エンジニアリング

Plant, piping and access, designed in

Condensers, coolers and refrigerant piping add heavy, vibrating loads to roofs and ceilings. We design dedicated plant platforms and pipe supports, fabricated with grating, handrails and ladders, so maintenance is safe and the roof stays watertight.

Corrosion protection is chosen for the condensation and wash-down conditions of food plants – galvanized secondary steel, epoxy systems or duplex coatings.

FAQ

よくある質問

Why put the steel frame outside the insulated box?

Steel inside a freezer must be insulated around, and every member crossing the envelope is a cold bridge that can cause condensation, ice and energy losses. With an external (box-in-box) frame the insulated room is continuous and the steel stays warm and dry.

Which panel thickness is needed?

As a guide, about 100–125 mm for chilled rooms, 150–200 mm for frozen rooms at −18 to −25 °C and 200 mm or more for blast freezers. The final thickness comes from the thermal design, energy targets and the panel supplier.

Do you design the refrigeration system?

No – refrigeration is designed by a specialist contractor. We coordinate with them to carry plant, piping, evaporator and ceiling loads, and provide platforms and supports for their equipment.

How is frost heave under freezer floors prevented?

Freezer slabs sit on insulation over a heated or ventilated sub-base that keeps the ground above freezing. The floor is designed by the civil engineer; our frame and wall bases are detailed to suit it.

Which fire performance do the panels need?

It depends on the code and the insurer: EN 13501-1 classes in Europe, NCC requirements in Australia, IBC and often FM approval in the US, QCVN 06 in Vietnam. We specify panels that meet the project's requirement.
