Welding consumables

ESAB

Welding and cutting company founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1904 by Oscar Kjellberg; now ESAB Corporation, listed in the United States.

ESAB was founded in 1904 in Gothenburg, Sweden, by Oscar Kjellberg, who developed the covered welding electrode. Today it operates as ESAB Corporation, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, with welding and cutting equipment, filler metals, gas control equipment, personal protective equipment and automation among its products. ESAB acquired Sandvik's welding wire business in 2018.

ESAB's filler metal range covers the processes used in steel structure fabrication: submerged arc wires and fluxes for long seam welds, flux-cored and solid wires for semi-automatic and robotic welding, and covered electrodes for manual welding. In a PEB plant, the web-to-flange welds of tapered members are made by SAW or FCAW, and the attachment of end plates, stiffeners and clips by FCAW or GMAW. Mechanised cutting systems prepare plates and bevels. Each consumable must be classified to the filler-metal specification referenced by the project code and used within the parameters of a qualified welding procedure specification, with attention to strength matching, impact toughness and hydrogen control for thicker plates.

Products used in PEB and steel structures

  • Submerged arc wires and fluxes – long longitudinal welds
  • Flux-cored and solid wires – frames, end plates and connections
  • Covered electrodes – manual and repair welding
  • Welding and cutting equipment – fabrication lines and plate preparation

In Vietnam

ESAB maintains a Vietnam country website and supplies filler metals and welding equipment to the Vietnamese market.
