Why the Incoterm matters

An Incoterms® rule decides three things in a sales contract: where the goods are delivered, when the risk of loss or damage passes from seller to buyer, and who pays for transport, insurance and customs on the way. It does not decide price, payment or ownership – those stay in the contract.

Structural steel is heavy, long and often oversize: members travel in flat racks, open-tops and break-bulk holds as well as standard containers. Choosing the right rule – and naming the place precisely, for example “FOB Ho Chi Minh City (Cat Lai), Incoterms® 2020” – avoids disputes about loading, port charges and damage in transit.

Risk & costs

Where risk and costs pass from World Steel to the buyer

Under the C-terms the seller pays freight beyond the point where the risk has already passed – the most common source of misunderstanding.

Responsibilities

Who does what under each rule

S = World Steel as seller · B = buyer. Insurance under D-terms is at the seller's risk, not a contractual duty; destination charges under C-terms follow the freight contract.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which Incoterm do you recommend for structural steel?

For break-bulk and project cargo where you book the vessel: FOB Ho Chi Minh City. For containers: FCA (our factory or a terminal). For a delivered-port price: CFR or CIF your port. For a delivered-site price: DAP your site.

Do you quote FOB for containers?

Yes. ICC recommends FCA for goods handed over at a container terminal, because risk can pass before loading on board, but we quote both and explain the difference.

What insurance do you arrange under CIF and CIP?

CIF includes cover to Institute Cargo Clauses (C) as the minimum; CIP requires ICC (A) all-risks. In both cases cover is 110 % of the invoice value, and we can arrange ICC (A) under CIF on request.

Can you deliver duty paid (DDP)?

Only in selected markets where an importer-of-record arrangement is possible. In most cases we recommend DAP, with import clearance by the buyer or its broker.

Which ports do you ship from?

Mainly Ho Chi Minh City (Cat Lai, Hiep Phuoc) and Cai Mep–Thi Vai, close to our factory at Hai Son Industrial Park. Other ports by arrangement.
