Consulting & value engineering – the right steel decisions, before you commit

Most of the cost of a steel structure is fixed at concept stage – by the frame type, spans, loads, member types, coating and the way it is delivered and erected. Our engineers join you before the contract, compare the options side by side and give you a safe, compliant and economical basis to decide on.

Good advice is cheapest at the start

Changing a span, a frame type or a coating system costs nothing on paper and a great deal once the steel is bought. That is why we bring engineering, fabrication, logistics and erection experience to the table at concept stage – when the decisions still move the price.

You receive clear options rather than a single answer: what each one weighs, what it costs to fabricate, ship and erect, how long it takes and what it means for your foundations and future use. You decide; we design what you choose.

Applications

What value engineering means at World Steel

01

Less steel, same safety

Members sized to the forces – tapered and built-up sections where they save weight, hot-rolled where they save labour.

02

Built for our factory

Sections, plates and connections that fabricate efficiently and bolt up quickly at site.

03

Shipped efficiently

Member lengths and packing planned for containers or break-bulk to your port.

04

Coating that fits the site

Protection chosen for the corrosivity and life you need – not more, not less.

05

Foundations in view

Frame options compared for column reactions as well as steel weight.

06

Clear scope

Design, supply, erection and local works split so nothing falls between contracts.

Options, not opinions

Every option compared on the same basis

For each alternative we set out the same facts: steel weight, fabrication and coating effort, shipping volume, erection time, column reactions and the risks. A tapered built-up frame may save steel; a hot-rolled frame may save fabrication time; a wider bay may reduce columns and foundations but add purlin weight. Seeing them together is what makes the choice yours.

From advice to design

One team from the first sketch to the drawings

The engineers who advise you are the team that designs and details the structure, so nothing is lost between consultant and fabricator. The agreed option becomes the proposal drawings with our quotation, then the approval drawings and the full design after the contract.

Process

How consulting works

  1. 1

    Brief

Your use, site, size, budget and programme – drawings or a sketch are enough.

  2. 2

    Basis

Code, loads and climate data for your market agreed.

  3. 3

    Options

Frame, member, coating and delivery alternatives compared side by side.

  4. 4

    Proposal

The chosen option issued as proposal drawings with the quotation.

  5. 5

    Contract

Scope and design basis fixed; design and approval follow.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is consulting charged separately?

Early advice and options for a qualified enquiry are part of our quotation service. Larger studies are agreed case by case.

What do you need from us to start?

The site location, use of the building, main dimensions and any architectural drawings or specification. A sketch is enough for a first comparison.

Does value engineering reduce safety?

No. Every option is designed and checked to the code of your market; value engineering removes steel that does no work, not safety margins.

Can you review a design made by another engineer?

Yes – we can review an existing design or specification and propose alternatives for your engineer to consider.

Talk to our engineers early

Send us your brief or concept drawings – we reply with options and a budget basis to decide on.
