Paints & protective coatings

Jotun

Norwegian paint and coatings manufacturer with decorative, marine, protective and powder coatings segments and factories in Vietnam.

Jotun was founded in 1926 in Sandefjord, Norway, and is organised into four segments: decorative paints, marine coatings, protective coatings and powder coatings. In Vietnam the company manufactures and supplies through Jotun Paints Vietnam, with production sites in Hiep Phuoc and Song Than 1 industrial parks.

For steel structures, the protective coatings segment is the relevant one. A typical shop-applied system for PEB primary members consists of abrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2½ per ISO 8501-1, a zinc-rich or epoxy primer, an epoxy intermediate coat where higher durability is required, and a polyurethane or other UV-resistant topcoat for exposed steel. The number of coats and dry film thickness are selected according to the corrosivity category (C2 to C5 or CX) and the required durability range under ISO 12944. Intumescent coatings are used where a fire-resistance rating is required. The coating manufacturer's product data and application instructions, including overcoating intervals and curing conditions, govern shop and site application, and inspection records of surface preparation and DFT form part of the fabricator's quality documentation. Powder coatings may be used on smaller accessories.

Products used in PEB and steel structures

  • Zinc-rich and epoxy primers – shop priming of blast-cleaned structural steel
  • Epoxy intermediate coats – build coats for C3 to C5 environments
  • Polyurethane topcoats – UV-resistant finish for exposed steel
  • Intumescent coatings – passive fire protection of steel members
  • Powder coatings – accessories and architectural components
