Overview
About Water-based intumescent coating
Applied like paint by airless spray, brush or roller over a compatible primer.
In a fire the coating expands into a thick insulating char that slows heating of the steel.
Thickness is set per member from the section factor, the critical temperature and the required rating.
Key benefits
- Slim, architectural finish – the shape of the steel stays visible
- Low VOC and low odour for occupied buildings
- Can be applied in the shop, so steel arrives protected
- Decorative topcoat in any colour

How we use Water-based intumescent coating in steel buildings
World Steel can apply the primer and intumescent coating in our blasting and painting shop, so members arrive at site already fire-protected – thickness per member from the fire engineer's schedule, recorded in the coating report.
- 01Specified with the structure – thickness, density and facing matched to the roof, wall and fire design.
- 02Quantities taken from the same 3D model as the steel, purlins and cladding.
- 03Packed and shipped with the steel package – one delivery schedule to site.
Applications
Where Water-based intumescent coating is used
- Exposed steel in atriums, lobbies and façades behind glass
- Office, retail and education buildings
- Car parks with suitable topcoat
