Eight layers of protection

Pre-painted sheet is a layered product. The steel base carries a metallic alloy coating – zinc (galvanized) or zinc-aluminium – on both faces; a conversion coating bonds the paint, a primer adds protection, and a polyester finish coat gives colour and UV resistance on the top face with a backing coat underneath.

Choosing the coating

  • Inland and mild environments: AZ100–AZ150 or Z180–Z275 with standard polyester paint
  • Coastal and industrial environments: heavier metallic coating and higher-durability paint systems
  • Severe marine or chemical exposure: special coatings or alternative materials on request

See metallic-coated sheet and paint and coating systems for more detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Z and AZ coatings?

Z is a pure zinc coating (galvanized); AZ is a zinc-aluminium alloy coating that usually lasts longer for the same coating mass in roofing exposure.
